Boreholes, SPT and sampling

Borehole investigation, Standard Penetration Tests and soil or rock sampling for civil engineering projects.

What it tells the engineer

Boreholes show what is actually in the ground. Standard Penetration Tests (SPT) give N-values for soil strength and density at set intervals, and disturbed and undisturbed samples go to the laboratory for testing.

When it is used

Foundation design for buildings, bridges and infrastructure, slope and retaining-wall design, and any site that needs soil and rock samples or groundwater observations.

How a job runs

  1. 1

    Brief

Your site, the structure and what the design needs to know.

  2. 2

    Plan

Test locations, methods and the reporting you need.

  3. 3

    Fieldwork

Testing, drilling and sampling on site by our field team.

  4. 4

    Report

Logs, plots and test results for your engineer.

Typical outputs

  • Borehole logs with soil and rock descriptions
  • SPT N-values with depth
  • Soil and rock samples for laboratory testing
  • Groundwater level observations

Questions

How many boreholes does my site need?

It depends on the site area, the structure and the ground. Your engineer specifies it, or we can propose a layout for discussion.

Can samples be tested in the same programme?

Yes. Samples are tested at NatTest Lab and the results are reported with the borehole logs.
