In-situ ground testing

Field tests to investigate ground conditions at selected locations. The method depends on the soil, access and investigation objective.

What it tells the engineer

Quick field tests measure ground properties where they are: Mackintosh/JKR probes for soil resistance, field vane for the shear strength of soft clay, permeability tests for drainage, and field density for compacted fill.

When it is used

Preliminary investigation, shallow foundations, soft-clay sites, earthworks quality checks, and drainage or infiltration design.

How a job runs

  1. 1

    Brief

Your site, the structure and what the design needs to know.

  2. 2

    Plan

Test locations, methods and the reporting you need.

  3. 3

    Fieldwork

Testing, drilling and sampling on site by our field team.

  4. 4

    Report

Logs, plots and test results for your engineer.

Typical outputs

  • Probe resistance with depth
  • Vane shear strength profiles
  • Permeability results
  • Field density and moisture results

Questions

Is a Mackintosh probe enough for my foundation?

It is a useful first check for light structures. For larger works it is used alongside boreholes or CPT.
